Planning & Problem Solving

Planning and problem-solving is the final category of executive function we explored in the ADHD Sweet Spot membership.  Conceptually, planning and problem-solving equate to mental play.  It’s about juggling the pieces of a situation and imagining ways to move the pieces around – that’s how we check to see if any steps make sense or are helpful in moving us towards the outcome we want.

You can use planning and problem-solving to assess your options and make a better choice compared to launching into action without thinking.  Planning will help you decide on a sequence of steps or actions, and to identify which possible sequences will be best.  And despite how the words might sound, planning and problem-solving is actually an innovative and creative space where you get to solve problems in the way that works best for YOU – this is the key to finding success with your ADHD brain. your ADHD brain.

Practical tips for Planning and Problem-Solving

The six executive functions work together to support your brain’s development and operation.  So when you approach planning and problem-solving, you draw on the tools and knowledge relevant to the other functions to put all the pieces of a problem together.

  • Try engaging your visual and working memory functions using an external tool such as a brain dump.  This tool engages your executive functions to take a problem out of your brain, manipulate the pieces, and create a solution.
  • Verbalise the problem and talk through the solution in live coaching so you can engage your verbal working memory.
  • Lay your plans out clearly so you can use your self-awareness and self-motivation to put things into action.
  • Practising a solid planning process and taking note of the execution steps will help you master your emotional regulation.

Planning and problem-solving is a practise

Like all good things, planning and problem-solving are long term practises.  Trial and error, and persistence are the keys to creating lasting solutions for your ongoing problems.  That is also why it is exceptionally difficult for an ADHDer!  When do we ever stick to something consistently?  The best way to get on top of your planning and problem solving is to find support, guidance, and accountability.  And with three live weekly group sessions, the ADHD Sweet Spot is the perfect place for that.

Self awareness is the ability to understand your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.  It is a key executive functioning skill. In fact, some would argue it is foundational to all the others. When we are aware of our own thoughts, feelings, and motivations, we are better able to control our impulses and make choices that are in our best interests.
